ITECH 18-19

The ITECH 2018-19 research demonstrator explores large-scale compliant architecture inspired by ladybug wing folding. It features two adaptive elements made from carbon and glass fibre-reinforced plastic, fabricated using robotic tape-laying technology. The structure uses flexible hinge zones with pneumatic actuators to achieve up to 80° of folding, enabling spatial reconfiguration. Each component, weighing 23 kg, integrates computational design, robotic fabrication, and interactive control systems. The demonstrator functions as an intelligent architectural system that adapts in real-time via integrated sensors and online communication, showcasing the potential of fibre-reinforced plastics in kinetic, responsive architecture.
