BamX UIO

BamX is a novel lightweight structural system that merges principles from segmented shells, elastic gridshells, and basket weaving. It features deployable cylindrical components connected at woven nodes, forming a stable, double-layered segmented shell. The BamX UIO demonstrator, built in Quito and inspired by Ecuador’s mangrove trees, spans 11.5 meters and introduces curved deployment paths, spatial nodes with valence 4, and triangular tiling for material continuity. Developed through advanced computational design and built with low-tech tools and local bamboo, the project showcases how high-tech methods can be translated into sustainable, hands-on construction using accessible fabrication techniques.
