BamX EPFL

BamX is an innovative lightweight structure that combines principles from segmented shells, elastic gridshells, and basket weaving. Its design uses deployable cylindrical components based on scissor mechanisms that compact for transport and expand to form a double-layered segmented shell. Components connect at woven nodes, where weaving principles lock the scissor systems, ensuring stability without external supports.
The BamX EPFL prototype spans 10.3 m and is composed of 36 deployable cylinders joined at 21 woven nodes in a mix of pentagons and hexagons. Weighing under 160 kg, the structure demonstrates a compact-to-volumetric assembly that ensures both flexibility and structural continuity.
